Hedgehog Fibres is the work of full-time independent dyer Beata, who is originally from Slovaka, now living in Cork, Ireland.
While many knitters cite the beautifully tactile fibres that first attracted them to Hedgehog Fibres’s work, it’s definitely Beata’s colourways that are the star attraction.
Beata’s inspiration for Hedgehog’s colourways come from nature, music, and the beautiful Irish countryside and culture. ”I love old Irish tales and legends, so dark and mystical; some of the dark colourways are probably inspired by that,” she says. “But I like combining and matching colours. At the moment, I’m into dark, muted colours and the purple/green combo.”
Perhaps part of the reason that so many knitters love crafting with Hedgehog Fibers is that Beata’s own sensibilities as a knitter and crafter inform her work.
“I started off as a knitter. Knitting is my first and uttermost love, but I like all things crafty, so I started dyeing yarn for myself first,” she explains. “Then I got fired from my job … so I took what was meant to be a half-year off. That time off led me to many ideas, one of which was turning yarn dyeing into a business, and it seems it has worked.”
Hedgehog Fibres is also going through an identity re-design, which is keeping Beata very busy: “The logo, website, yarn labels, business cards–but it seems like a long journey before everything is finished!” This hasn’t kept Beata from considering new products for the line, though. ”Gossamer weight yarn? Not sure whether there’s market for it. Also, I’d like to have few more different fibre blends.”
Beata sells her yarns through her Etsy store and it can be difficult to get the sale, as Beata’s many fans keep a sharp eye peeled (mainly through her Ravelry group, Hedgehog Fibre Rocks) for the re-stocking of the store. If you’d like to buy a skein or two in a certain colourway, though, contact Beata directly, and she’ll dye your request and put it up on the Etsy store marked specially for you.
I’ve yet to purchase the colourways I have my eye on, as my queue is full up at the moment with Christmas presents already purchased for, but I’ll definitely be buying, hopefully before we leave Ireland. And, of course, just in case anyone’s wondering what an ideal Christmas present might be… :)
Keep an eye on her blog to see what Beata’s up to, to see some gorgeous handknits in Beata’s luscious colorways, and keep up with Lola the dog, as well.
