Check Out The Archives

Strasbourg Vest

Hmmm. I can’t quite decide if I like this one or not. It’s an interesting project; another of the free patterns from Caron. (They really are putting together some rather interesting projects these days.) The gathered yoke forms either a v-neck, boat neck, or wide scoop neck, depending on your mood and how tight you gather up the neckline.

I’ve a feeling that this one really needs the loose drape of some form of rayon or slinky acryclic or even a silk blend to look good — any amount of a stiff hand at all, and my bet is the thing would look less than flattering.

Can’t…quite…decide…  What do you guys think? Cute? Or only looks good on that skinny little mini model?

Cute *idea*, but honestly it doesn’t even look great on the model. Definitely needs drape, but I’d say it also needs a bit of waist shaping. Some kind of lace patterning on the collar might make it look lighter and less clunky, to (although possibly it needs the ribbing to stay on the shoulders in the widest “setting”!).

PS Ooh, this is fun, it’s like an un-fuggening…

      Heh. You’re so funny!

I’m not so sure it needs waist shaping…if you’re a slip of thing, I think it could look okay if maybe you just didn’t make the yoke quite so heavy — maybe not as wide? or using some kind of lacy pattern, as you suggest?

Or of course you could go the route of making the body rather more figure conscious, as you say, Robynn…but doing the squint test at this, I just think the yoke is too heavy for the body, proportionately speaking…

  3. I hated it on first sight.

It looks like the ‘costumes” I made out of grain sacks when I was a kid, all bunching, no beauty.

LOL! I don’t hate it…but there’s definitely something wrong, whether it’s the proportion or…looking at it again, I’m wondering if part of the problem is that the front plackets are pulling up slightly. It’s stopping the drape…

I really do think this is a candidate for silk yarn…

You know, it’s too bad that we’re all so short of extra time. It’d really be a lot of fun to take a pattern that we all really don’t like and do a KAL where we all try to turn it into a pattern that we DO like through mods and such…
